Somontano

Since 1984, it has become a prestigious PDO, featured on select wine lists. Located on the pre-Pyrenean plains, wines are produced with freshness, fruitiness, and body that align well with current consumer preferences. These are modern, fruity, and well-balanced wines made in the pre-Pyrenees of Huesca.

The properties of Somontano PDO wines are well integrated, thanks to the presence of indigenous varieties such as Moristel, Parraleta, and Alcañón, which contribute unique characteristics and complement the other authorized varieties. The distinctiveness of the soils—mainly calcisol and gypsisol—together with the pronounced thermal contrast between minimum and maximum temperatures during August and September, favors the production of wines with a fruity profile, high acidity, and intense aromas. The continental Mediterranean climate, humid and cold in the north and more arid and warm in the south and east, further enhances these qualities, resulting in wines with strong personality and clear expression of terroir.

The Somontano PDO was established in 1984, becoming one of the pioneering appellations in Aragón and the first to be created in Alto Aragón, at the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the Somontano de Huesca region. The name Somontano means “at the foot of the mountain” and reflects its unique transitional territory between the Ebro Valley and the Pyrenean mountains, where vines have been cultivated since ancient times, including during Roman and medieval periods.
