Cariñena

‘The wine of stones’, due to the stony terrain that makes up the Designation of Origin. A geographical area that stands out for its perfect blend of tradition and innovation. An area where tradition and innovation go hand in hand. Vineyards on stony soils and a harsh climate produce concentrated, aromatic grapes. Wines with an incomparable flavour.

Geographic area

The geographical area of the Cariñena PDO, consisting of land located in 16 municipalities, is situated in the south of the province of Zaragoza, in a territory with a long history of wine production that encompasses the Sierra de Algairén and Campo de Cariñena areas, characterised by its continental climate and stony, limestone soils.

Comarcas

The origins of Aragonese vineyards lie in the region known as Celtiberia, where the Roman villa of Carae, now Cariñena, was located. Furthermore, from the 15th to the 19th centuries, numerous chronicles praised the wines of Cariñena. Later, in 1932, coinciding with the creation of the designations of origin, the Cariñena Oenological Station was inaugurated.

Temporada

All year

  • The vines survive in almost extreme conditions and produce small grapes, which are therefore more concentrated, intense and aromatic, to make wines with an incomparable flavour.

The Cariñena PDO is one of the oldest wine designations of origin in Spain and the oldest in Aragon. The wine tradition in this area has been documented for centuries, to the extent that the Cariñena Town Council established rules to regulate and protect wine quality in the 17th century, which was exceptional for the time. This historical heritage makes Cariñena a benchmark for Spanish wine and a symbol of the region’s commitment to quality and wine-making tradition.
